There are many myths about the hellbender, sadly many of them have been to its detriment.  Many fishermen killed hellbenders on sight, believing that they preyed upon game fish and their eggs.  While hellbenders do eat small fish, studies have found no trace of game fish such as bass in their stomachs.  Another story is that hellbenders are venomous, with fangs similar to that of a snake.  This is patently untrue; hellbenders do have sharp teeth, but no fangs, and certainly have no venom.  In fact, they are quite harmless to humans.
